What Is DTF Printing?

DTF stands for Direct to Film. It's a digital printing process where your design is printed onto a special PET film using DTF inks, coated with hot melt adhesive powder, cured, and then heat pressed onto your chosen fabric or substrate. The adhesive bonds the print permanently to the material, creating a flexible, durable finish that works on virtually any fabric — including cotton, which sublimation cannot print on effectively.

How DTF Printing Works

The DTF process involves five key steps:

1. Design Your Artwork
Your design is created or prepared in graphic design software. Unlike sublimation, DTF doesn't require mirroring the image. High-resolution artwork with vibrant colours produces the best results.

2. Print onto DTF Film
The design is printed directly onto a special PET film using DTF inks — a combination of CMYK colours plus white ink. The white ink is printed as a base layer, ensuring colours pop on dark fabrics.

3. Apply Hot Melt Adhesive Powder
While the ink is still wet, hot melt adhesive powder is applied evenly across the printed surface. Excess powder is shaken off, and the film is cured in an oven or with a heat gun to melt the powder into the ink.

4. Heat Press Transfer
The cured film is placed face-down onto the garment and pressed in a heat press at approximately 160–170°C for 10–15 seconds. The heat and pressure bond the adhesive to the fabric fibres.

5. Peel and Finish
Once pressed, the film is peeled away — either hot or cold depending on the transfer type — leaving a vibrant, flexible print permanently bonded to the garment. A second press with a silicone sheet gives a smoother, more professional finish.
